How Christianity, Islam, and although not a religion ,Communism, turned Love into the deadliest force in human history…and what they were actually meant to be.
Begin With the Dead…
Before we speak of God, we must speak of the bodies.
Sixty million Christians slaughtered across the centuries of Islamic expansion.
Eighty million Hindus killed during eight hundred years of jihad across the Indian subcontinent…so many that the mountain range marking the path of that conquest is still called the Hindu Kush. The funeral pyre of the Hindus. Named for the dead.
Ten million Buddhists erased from Central Asia, their monasteries burned, their lineages severed. One hundred and twenty million human beings taken through the Islamic slave trade…men castrated, women sold, children separated from everything they had ever known, for centuries, across three continents.
The Crusades sent wave after wave of armed men across Europe and into the Holy Land, killing somewhere between one and three million people across two hundred years.
The Spanish Inquisition tortured human beings for the contents of their minds. The Thirty Years War…Christian armies fighting Christian armies over doctrine , killed between four and eight million people, depopulating entire regions of Europe. Villages disappeared. Bloodlines ended. Children grew up knowing nothing but the smell of burning.
Colonial Christianity brought the cross to the Americas, Africa, and Asia on the same ships as the sword. Tens of millions of indigenous people were killed, enslaved, or deliberately infected. Entire civilizations that had existed for thousands of years were erased within generations. The men who did it believed they were saving souls.
Then the 20th century arrived and secular materialism…the philosophical removal of the sacred from human civilization , took political form as communism, and demonstrated what happens when the ego achieves total power with no transcendent force to hold it accountable.
Stalin killed between six and twenty million of his own people. Through purges, forced collectivization, engineered famines, and the Gulag system, a vast archipelago of labor camps where human beings were worked to death in Siberian darkness for the crime of disagreement. Families were separated in the night. Children were encouraged to report their parents. Entire ethnic populations were relocated to die slowly in frozen wastelands.
Mao Zedong killed between forty and eighty million people. His Great Leap Forward engineered one of the worst famines in human history…grain was confiscated from villages that were then left to starve while the state exported food to demonstrate ideological success. His Cultural Revolution sent teenagers into the streets to beat their teachers to death and destroy every artifact of civilization that predated the revolution. Universities were shuttered. Doctors were sent to dig ditches. Ancient temples were demolished. The accumulated wisdom of millennia …burned.
Pol Pot eliminated approximately one quarter of Cambodia’s entire population in four years. Doctors, teachers, artists, anyone who wore glasses ,killed, because glasses suggested literacy, and literacy suggested the capacity for independent thought. Children were separated from their parents and trained as executioners. The killing fields became mass graves so vast they are still being mapped.
Between these three systems…Christianity, Islam, and the communist expression of secular materialism ,historians estimate that somewhere between two hundred and five hundred million human beings have been killed across the last fourteen centuries.
Killed in the name of God. Killed in the name of the Prophet. Killed in the name of History and the Revolution and the inevitable triumph of the proletariat.
Two hundred to five hundred million Souls.
Each one someone’s child. Someone’s beloved. Someone who woke up that morning with no idea it was the last morning they would ever have.
And every single perpetrator…every Crusader, every jihadist, every commissar, every inquisitor, every commissar with a quota and a list of names ,believed, with total conviction, that what they were doing was righteous.
That is the wound we are here to face.
That is what the Great Remembering asks us to look at without flinching, without the comfort of blaming only the other tradition, without the escape hatch of claiming our own system was the exception.
Here is the truth that makes the wound even deeper…
Every single one of these systems began as a transmission of love so radical it threatened the existing order.
Every. Single. One.
The Pattern That Repeats
The mechanism is always identical.
A man of genuine awakening receives a transmission so potent, so structurally threatening to the existing order, that the existing order eventually kills him for it…or, more insidiously, absorbs him. Takes his name. Builds institutions in his honor. And then uses those institutions to do precisely what he came to undo.
Jesus of Nazareth walked into Jerusalem on a donkey ,specifically refusing the symbolism of the war horse. He healed the soldiers sent to arrest him. He forgave his executors from the cross. He taught that love practiced without exception toward friend and enemy alike was more powerful than any empire on earth. Three centuries later his name was on the banners of Constantine’s conquering armies. The cross ,once the symbol of sovereign surrender ,became a sword. Within a thousand years, armies were marching into Jerusalem killing everything that moved and calling it the will of God.
Muhammad received a revelation of mercy so total that the Quran named God Al-Rahman, Al-Rahim …the Compassionate, the Merciful …at the opening of nearly every chapter. When he finally conquered Mecca after years of exile, persecution, and war, he looked at the people who had tortured his followers and tried to destroy everything he carried, and said: “Go, for you are free.” Within generations his successors were building empires on the blade, and within centuries the Hindu Kush had earned its name.
Marx burned with a moral fury so fierce it read like prophecy. Children dying in factories. Human beings reduced to the economic value of their labor. He declared that every human being carries inherent worth that no system has the right to reduce. His philosophical foundation, however, was secular materialism ,the insistence that there is no sacred dimension to reality, nothing transcendent, nothing beyond the material world. That foundation could not hold the weight of the vision it was meant to carry. Within decades, men carrying his name had built that philosophy into a state religion ,complete with prophets, scripture, heresy trials, and gulags. Communism was secular materialism handed a gun and given total authority. The result was the bloodiest century in human history.
The teacher. The transmission. The capture. The inversion.
Three times. The same arc.
The Enemy Was Always the Same
The men who hijacked these traditions did so with the same weapon every time.
Certainty weaponized.
The sacred absolute…God, History, the Revolution, the Party ,placed beyond questioning. The leader made infallible. The other dehumanized. Doubt declared heresy. Violence sanctified as divine necessity.
This is the ego in its most dangerous form…dressed in sacred clothing, speaking the language of liberation, wielding the authority of the transmission it has consumed.
The Inquisitor believed he was serving Christ.
The jihadist believes he is honoring the Prophet.
The commissar believed he was liberating humanity.
Each was serving something far older and far smaller than what they claimed. The will to dominate, wearing whatever costume the era provided.
And secular materialism revealed, in its communist expression, what the religious distortions had always obscured…the sacred does not disappear when you formally remove it.
It goes underground. In the dark, without examination, without the tempering force of genuine spiritual depth and genuine surrender, it becomes monstrous. The ego without the transcendent does not become free. It becomes totalitarian. Stalin and Mao built Godless theocracies, with all the fervor, all the certainty, all the persecution of heretics that the worst religious institutions ever produced, and none of the wisdom that might have tempered them.
The tragedy is that ordinary human beings ,carrying genuine faith, genuine hunger for meaning, genuine love for their tradition or their vision of justice ,were mobilized by these men to fight and kill and die and destroy each other.
People who shared the same original ache. The hunger for the sacred. The desire for justice. The longing to belong to something larger than themselves.
Organized into armies against each other.
By leaders who needed their division.
What Was Actually Given..
Beneath the centuries of blood, the original transmissions still burn.
Jesus gave the Sermon on the Mount — a complete map of inner transformation, in which love practiced toward enemies dissolves the defended self and opens the human being into a sovereignty that no empire can touch. The Beatitudes are stages of awakening. The command to love your enemy, spoken in Greek as agape, means unconditional, non-retaliatory, all-encompassing love that lays down its life for others.
Gandhi ,a Hindu , read this teaching twice daily for forty years and called it the greatest writing on nonviolence in human history.
The original fire of Christianity is a transmission about the nature of reality: that separation is the root illusion, that love is the organizing force of existence, that the human being who lives from that place becomes untouchable by any power built on fear.
Muhammad gave the world mercy as a first principle. Silm, the root of Islam, means peace. Dar as-Salam …the ideal society in Islamic teaching, means the House of Peace. The truly strong person, the Prophet taught, is the one who masters himself in anger.
The Sufi masters who preserved the deepest current of the tradition built their entire doctrine on sulh-i-kul — peace with all, without exception. Rumi wept for the separation from the Source and produced the most luminous love poetry in human history from inside that grief. The inner jihad ,the war against the ego, the shadow of the self ,was always the real jihad. The outer violence was the inner violence finding an external target.
Marx gave the world a moral vision so fierce it still has not been fully answered..every human being carries inherent worth that no economic system has the right to reduce. The hunger for justice, for the equitable sharing of resources, for the protection of the vulnerable from the predatory appetites of the powerful …this is a genuine and sacred impulse. Where secular materialism failed was precisely in its denial of the sacred. A civilization that attempts to honor human dignity while insisting that nothing transcendent grounds that dignity builds on sand. When the ideology shifts, the dignity goes with it. The moral outrage that gave the original vision its fire was never truly secular. It was the sacred, speaking through the only vocabulary that tradition had left available.
Three transmissions. Three fires. All pointing at the same truth…
The human being is Sacred.
Separation is the wound.
Love is the medicine.
And any system, religious or secular
, that treats human beings as expendable in service of the absolute has already become what it claimed to oppose.
The WarriorSages Are Rising
Here is what is happening beneath the noise.
Across every tradition, in every corner of the world, human beings are waking up to the hijack…
Christians who love Jesus and refuse to bless bombs.
Muslims who carry the Prophet’s mercy and stand against the men who carry his name toward murder.
Secular humanists who feel the sacred burning in their moral outrage and are beginning to stop pretending it is merely philosophical.
These are the WarriorSages.
They go back ,past the institution, past the doctrine, past the centuries of accumulated distortion ,and find the original transmission still burning at the root. They carry it forward with fierce clarity and undefended love. They refuse the call to fight the other tradition, recognizing that the call always comes from someone who needs the fight more than they need the truth.
The WarriorSage standing inside Christianity and the WarriorSage standing inside Islam and the WarriorSage standing inside secular humanism ,when each has done their genuine inner work ,discover they are standing on the same ground. The ground of the original ache. The hunger for the sacred. The recognition that separation is the wound and love, in all its fierce and demanding and non-sentimental forms, is the only force that heals it.
Leaders who mobilize our religions and our philosophies against each other are serving the distortion.
Leaders who help us remember what was actually given ,across all traditions, beneath all the blood ,are serving the Great Remembering.
The difference is visible. One produces division, fear, and the intoxication of righteous hatred. The other produces the discomfort of honest reckoning and the spaciousness of genuine belonging.
One shrinks the Soul.
The other returns it to its original size.
The Call…
We are living inside a moment of civilizational choice.
The old distortions are losing their power to hold the center. The institutions built on hijacked transmissions are cracking under the weight of what they have produced. The men who needed our division to maintain their authority are louder than ever ,which is precisely the sound a structure makes as it begins to fail. Into that cracking, the original transmissions are rising.
WarriorSages across every tradition are finding each other. Recognizing each other. Standing together on the ground that was always shared ,the ground of the sacred, the ground of human dignity, the ground of love fierce enough to face the wound without flinching and tender enough to hold what is found there.
This is the Great Remembering.
A return to what was given before it was captured.
A reclamation of the fire at the root of every tradition worth belonging to.
A rising ,together, across every line that was drawn to keep us apart ,into the fullness of what we were always meant to be.
The transmission was never lost.
It was waiting.
It is waiting now.
In you.
